An Architectural Gem, The Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza Receives a Renovation
The use of mirrored glass and striking geometry at The Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza, designed by Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo, is an architectural gem steeped in history. The hotel opened its doors nearly fifty years ago and has just received a modern renovation. The Hardy Group completed the project management of this renovation on schedule and while the hotel was operating. The renovation was designed by dash design; architect of record, Dyami Architecture PC; general contractor, Central Interiors; procurement agent, Alternate Resources.
The existing (landmarked) reception desk was renovated to address Hilton brand standards and the satellite bell/reception desk was added to address ADA needs and designed to fit within the design aesthetic of the existing reception desk. The lobby lounge received new carpeting, entirely new seating, tables, drapery, decorative lighting, art, and unique accessories. The lobby library boasts new millwork shelving, carpeting, tables, soft seating, art, and accessories, to compliment the restaurant and ambassador grill’s new millwork buffet, new dining chairs and tables, and artwork. Old floor tiles were replaced to match original ones, and ceiling panels were restored or replaced to match the original Landmark condition.
Existing angular walls and pure faceted forms are paired with soft curved furnishings and textural fabrics. The lavish use of marble on the floors is to be complemented with organic style carpeting. Accents of brass and other metals are used as highlights and echo the reflective quality of existing glass paneling. Along with new additions, the restoration of key architectural features will be vital in elevating the interiors to their original brilliance and ensuring it remains a distinctive landmark at the pinnacle of modernist style and innovative luxury. The updates to the interiors are retrospective in nature, with an eye forward and a pulse on the needs of today’s business and leisure guest. Effortlessly timeless, always adaptive.
