Renovated Hilton Portland Downtown Debuts Following Multi-Million Dollar Conversion

The Hilton Portland Downtown, located in the heart of the city’s downtown, has undergone a property-wide transformation. Led by development services firm The Hardy Group, the project scope included an extensive renovation, conversion, and re-positioning.

The Hilton Portland Downtown previously comprised a total 782 guest rooms within two separate towers – the Main Tower and Executive Tower. The Hilton Portland remains in the Main Tower and has undergone a complete revitalization, while the Executive Tower has been converted into a new boutique property, the Duniway Portland.

“Throughout this complex, multi-million-dollar project, it was important for us to stay on deadline and keep the hotel accessible to guests as we reimagined everything from the guestrooms to the brand-new hotel concept in the second tower,” says Peter Speth, senior project director for The Hardy Group.

Updates to the Hilton Portland include a guestroom redesign, lobby reconfiguration, and 6,500 square feet of freshly added meeting and event space. Deriving design inspiration from the 1960s, though with a contemporary spin, the guestrooms will feature new artwork, furniture, and technology. Meanwhile, a former athletic club was converted into a 5,500-square-foot ballroom with windows on three walls and a skylight, as well as additional meeting space. An expanded fitness room was moved to the first floor. The lobby was renovated with new carpeting, tile flooring, paint, wallcoverings, lighting, and furniture, with the front desk relocated to the two-story atrium.

The Executive Tower building across the street from the main tower of the hotel has been transformed into a 327-room boutique lifestyle hotel under the name the Duniway Portland. Additionally, The Hardy Group managed development of a striking concept and design for the restaurant, which is called Jackrabbit and features the cuisine of celebrated chef Chris Cosentino. Creative design elements were incorporated into the meeting spaces and lobby. And the guestrooms were completely renovated from wall finishes to furniture, while guest bathrooms were updated, with tubs converted to showers.

Work in both towers proceeded while the hotel remained fully operational. The design was overseen by The Gettys Group, The Design Agency, and PUNCH Architecture, while the architecture was led by GBD Architects.
